AM is putting the finishing touches on his new album produced with Joey Waronker (Beck, Atoms For Peace, Ultraista). The first track reveals a blissful re-working of Harry Nilsson's "Me And My Arrow" which was featured on the legendary 70's psychedelic cartoon The Point. The result is part folk, part kraut and utterly original. In addition to producing, Waronker and AM played all the instruments themselves giving the song exceptional charm and space.
"I've always been a fan of Joey's drumming on Beck's Mutations and Sea Change albums so to be making a record together has been such a cool experience," says AM. "It's really just him and I in a modest studio surrounded by synths, a few amps and one drum kit. Joey's playing drums and percussion and I'm basically doing the rest. I never fancied myself a multi-instrumentalist, but that's just how it worked out. The first time I tracked bass with him live I remember thinking how surreal it was...to be making music with someone who had played on some of your favorite records."
The new album, currently titled New Normal, is certainly no novice affair and blends the familiar on multiple levels mixing 70's/early 80's kraut and post disco sounds with more acoustic songs and soft pop. Shimmering melodies and expertly laid back drumming make this a record well worth the wait. "It's somewhere between The Wall and After The Gold Rush", says AM. "It's got the American folk thing, but it's got a lot of synths and groove to it as well."
New Normal will be AM's first full length album since 2010's critically acclaimed Future Sons & Daughters and 2011's ultra groovy Celestial Electric, a collaboration with London producer/multi-instrumentalist Shawn Lee which the pair have been touring steadily since it's release on Thievery Corporation's ESL Record label last fall. Having just wrapped up a European tour AM & Shawn Lee are announcing a headlining US tour late summer in combination with festival appearances at Bumbershoot in Seattle, Washington and The New York State Fair.
